I haven’t seen Steven Wright in decades, so I was intrigued when he showed up to perform at a local casino. My experience is that most comedians update and hone their act over time. But no, not Steven Wright. He’s still telling all the same jokes today that he told 30 years ago. He even leaves in the old jokes about his visit to a video rental store. No noticeably new material, absolutely no audience interaction, and nothing spontaneous. Seriously, save your ticket money and watch the YouTube video of his first Tonight Show appearance in 1982, because he uses all the exact same jokes in his 21st century show.
Steven Wright is one of the things that makes me go hmm… When asked for my favorite quote, one of his always comes to mind.
His material is very, very entertaining, in that it is based entirely on wordplay and semantics. Wright breaks the mold of “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.”
very whimsically thoughtful, very subtly satirical, very philosophical…a full package! one of the best of all time. Ironic, and iconic. he delivers exactly the way his material demands. perfect. purrrrrr-fect, even though i prefer his bit about a dog named Spot.
A prolific and brilliant writer, the one element missing is depth of emotion. As masterful as the material is, it is totally lacking any sense of joy.
One of the most knock’em down comedians of the last 30 years. Some of the best material in the business.
Extremely inventive. “I have a Pony” is one of the greatest comedy albums ever. His delivery was originally pretty creative too, but it can get extremely old and boring.
One of the most ingenious & inventive comics ever to grace a stage. Very intelligent comedy! How refreshing. *;-~i
