Taking Stand-Up Seriously

For a while now, I have been obsessed with stand up comedy, as I see it as the last stand of truley free speech.  Wizards like Oswalt, Black, Geraldo, Burr…they all get the job done so well.

But after the top tier guys it seems like there is nothing but a vast wasteland of hangers on and niche comedians. I am looking for a comedy album that is supported by people who seem to know what comedy is all about. None of this Carlos Mencia bullshit, fuck Larry the Cable Douche, and Doug Benson and that whole class of second tier, un-original hacks.

And if anyone knows of any good albums on i-tunes, I would appreciate the heads up. I have scowered it for a while and picked it clean of what I found to be entertaining. Even got stuck with a few shit cans.

I don’t mean to come off as bitter, but it just seems that the world of stand up comedy is routed through a cable network channel (that shall remain nameless) that is starting to strangle the field.

Just looking for a little grass-roots love.

thanks.

You seem to like intelligent funny comedians. You probably already know them but here’s a few album that I enjoyed:

Doug Stanhope - Something to take the edge off : Stanhope is one of the funniest drunk descendant of Bill Hicks you’ll ever see.

Joe Rogan - Shiny happy jihad: Rogan proves to be more than a Mencia hater with this album. He’s a guy who respect stand up comedy and try to add something to this art.

David Cross - Not funny: Not the best delivery but worth listening. Definitely a different point of view than what you usually here. Well now in this dumbed down culture, just by having a point of view you seem different.

Louis CK - Anything from him. He’s one of the best today

Maria Bamford - Unwanted toughts syndrome: Behind the silly voices lay a great social critic

Dana Gould - Let me put my toughts into you: He’s back with a strong set. I really enjoyed it

And of course everything from Hicks especially Rant in e minor
