It’s given birth to a solid number of talented comedians. It’s the largest island in the continental US and 17th largest in the world. It’s the suburban prototype. To it’ west is one of the world’s greatest cities. To it’s east is one of the world’s wealthiest and most celebrity-laden communities. But despite its surroundings, Long Island remains to some degree isolated (note that to it’ss east is also the world’s second largest ocean). Long Islanders do possess a unique mentality. Unfortunately, many don’t realize that their mentality is unique (see isolationism and xenophobia). To many, Long Island is the “real world” and anything geographically foreign is socially foreign and therefore dismissed. Interest in, never mind pursuit of, culture outside of the everyday suburban routine is frowned upon by the aforementioned isolated and the pursuer is now even further isolated. What potential does all of this hold for a person raised in such an environment? Frustration? Maybe. Depression? Possibly. Insanity? Likely. Comedic Sensibility? Definitely. But where is the comedy? A scattering of comedy clubs with high admission fees and drink minimums. “Open mikes” where aspiring comedians have to pay to perform? There is a truer, more sincere comedy scene on LI. It’s just untapped. This is a call to arms for fellow aspiring comediens to help develop a starting ground for upcoming talent. It can be done. This is my first post. More to come.
