No worries, Siggers. You should mark those comics as your favorites through the Stand-Up Comic Database. Just go to

http://www.dead-frog.com/comedians/comic/richard_pryor

to mark Richard as one of your favorites. Just click the link to the right of the red button. You can do the rest the same way. If you have any problems with it, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for breakin’ in the system!

Don’t mention it brother you could go to Wikipedia, and answers.com for biography on all the comedians listed here.

Actually Siggers, though there are part of the database that are not as complete as Wikipedia, there are parts that have information that is not in wikipedia. And eventually, as it grows, I hope it’ll be more comprehensive and hopefully something that wikipedia people use as a source. Wikipedia depends on sources and my goal for this is to create a reliable source about stand-up, like IMDB is a source for movies and TV. There’s going to be a lot of comics in here that wikipedia doesn’t yet cover or cover well.

Plus the interactive elements I was mentioning - the selecting of favorites, the rating of comics - are things you can’t do at wikipedia. Plus the pulling of youtube videos and the sample jokes are not in other databases.

And, though I enjoy Wikipedia, I remember when Richard Jeni died, I went there to get information to write a post for the blog. As it turns out the birthdate on Wikipedia was wrong. I had started the database prior to that point and went to consult it - the Richard Jeni birthdate was accurate there. Wikipedia is good, but it’s not perfect. Neither will this, but with a focus on a narrower band of knowledge, I hope to make some special for the community.

If you don’t want to add your favorites through the database that’s fine, but I’d love to have as many viewpoints as possible there.

Dude, I just realized you could have been telling me where I could find Bios for the comics because I mentioned I was working on them in my post. My apologies if I read that wrong - I just had my precrafted reply about wikipedia in my head and just reading the word triggered me to type it.

Thanks, look forward to you adding your list. Some of those comics are people who I have to add to mine.

Oh yeah, that’s the plan. I’m thinking about putting in, of course links to current news about them plus any blog post I made about them. Part of my plan and glad somebody else thinks that would be good to add.

I really like this. I had been mulling over in my head if I wanted to tackle such a project myself. Perhaps not quite as extensive as yours but along the same thought process. You saved me a lot of time, except for the tracking down of about 200 comic’s homepages of varying fame.

Oh well, I’ll jut bask in your awesomeness on this site instead now. Thanks for the huge effort. This had to take ages just for the set up, let alone tracking down each individual’s info.

Thanks for the praise. Though I mentioned I’ve been working on it since January, I’ve been thinking about it for longer. I started coding it all by myself earlier last year and then I woke up and said, I’ll never teach myself to code fast enough to make this work the way I want it to. So I found an alternative solution.

Getting the data together is a big deal. I have a stack of books setting next to my desk that I’m going to go through and use as info for other parts of the database. I hope this raises the esteem for the art form without taking any fun out of it, which is always the danger in building something about comedy.

If you know of anything for a particular comic is missing, there’s a link at the bottom of each comedian. Write me and let me know. I’ll do the research real quick and update as necessary. This goes for anything on their jokes, works, links… and bios when they go up.

I’ll be sure to do that. I assume you’ll want to know about potential errors as well. I’m pretty sure you didn’t mean to list Kinison as Clean on the blue meter… heh heh.

One of the last things I did was the blue meter… so naturally I missed some. Kinison appropriately marked as “filthy” now.

This site just keeps getting better and better every day.  I love stand-up comedy and have for as long as I can remember.  The stand-up comic database is a great idea, and I love that their works are incorporated into their bios.  I have a bit more to say, but let me answer the question posed by this thread first.

Favorite Comics Of All Time (in no particular order):

1. George Carlin
2. Bill Hicks
3. Richard Pryor
4. Eddie Murphy
5. Eddie Izzard
6. Jamie Foxx
7. Chris Rock
8. Dave Chappelle
9. Brian Regan

Favorite “Up & Coming” Comics (in no particular order):

1. Mike Birbiglia
2. Daniel Tosh
3. Kyle Cease
4. ...

Ok, scrap that.  I don’t know how to answer this question.  I like too many comics to put them in any kind of ranking.

Back to my comments about the site.

As I mentioned, one of the cool features of this site is the collection of works in the comics’ bio.  I own close to 100 stand-up DVD and probably more than 150 stand-up albums.  I always keep my eyes open for new albums/dvds, but not all comics sell their albums through big resellers like Amazon.  Take Bill Burr, for example.  He has an album called “Emotionally Unavailable” that is absolutely hysterical.  Yet, if you don’t check billburr.com, good luck finding it.

I think having a database like you have envisioned will prove to be incredibly helpful.

Thanks for all the hard work!!!
