“No, I’m Not Australian” by South African comedian Gary Wolf [San Diego]

It’s a jungle out there. Especially if you’ve travelled to each continent, and STILL can’t communicate with a native speaker.

On Memorial Day Weekend, join Gary Wolf for a bonanza of cultural nuances, quirky travel stories, and enough worldly wisdom to fill your “boot” with new South Afrikaans lingo. Whether you’ve been to all continents or one, see how language differences becomes a highlight of conversation when you barely understand the other person. Gary presents a show of cultural oddities with enough wit and smarts to show you that we’re really all of a similar dialect.

Join us next week for a one hour immersion into the most international hour of your life. If you speak another language or would like to meet locals who do speak well, see if you get served what Gary describes as “a four-step process.”

Watch a preview here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H073-SPQi0Q

Ages: 16 & up

More about Gary:
Gary Wolf was born in a small mining town called Randfontein 40 miles outside of Johannesburg. Not wanting to pursue a career as a miner, Gary moved to Johannesburg where he completed high school and then served a year in the South African military. Gary learned very early on, on the second day, that perhaps enrolling in the military was not the best idea.

After completing the military he spent 3 years at business college learning things that only took another 3 years to unlearn. After college he backpacked through Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Portugal, England, the US, Mexico and Canada. Then he rested.

After traveling the year he decided to settle on a kibbutz (socialist farm) in Israel hoping to become proficient in Hebrew and Arabic and then to bring peace to the middle east. He landed up working in the dairy and milking cows instead.

His idealism never died though and upon returning to South Africa he worked for a non-profit organization helping promote literacy programs in prisons and rural areas. This lead to a two year stint as a business studies teacher at a local high school. After selling his Johannesburg apartment he invested in another backpacking trip. This trip covered Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China. A lot of noodles were consumed before coming to San Diego for a wedding.

After a cloudless wedding ceremony in Torrey Pines state park Gary decided to settle in this tropical paradise and tell jokes. He likes it here.
