First Steven Wright Special in 15 Years Announced

Comedy Central has just announced that they’ll be airing a one-hour Steven Wright special titled “When the Leaves Blow Away” on Saturday, October 21 at 9 PM. It’s a pretty big deal considering the last time anyone could see an hour of Steven’s material on TV was 1985 with HBO’s “A Steven Wright Special.” And the only stand-up of Steven’s that you can buy is his 1986 album, “I Have a Pony.”

When you account for how influential he’s been - the list of names linked to him include Mitch Hedberg, Demetri Martin and Mike Birbiglia - it’s pretty exciting for material of his to reach a new generation of people who probably were only able to see him live for the most part. More to come, I’m sure…

Correction: There was a special entitled “Wicker Chairs and Gravity” that appeared on HBO in 1990/1991. So it’s not 20 but rather 15, but still a long time…

Update: The special will also be released on DVD by Image Entertainment. Also included on the DVD will be Wright-directed short “One Soldier” (which I saw a few years ago at the Toyota Comedy Festival - highly recommended). No release date as of yet.
