Comedy Village Closes

I caught the second to last show at New York’s Comedy Village (formerly the Boston Comedy Club) this past Saturday. I wasn’t a regular at the club, but it definitely had its place in the comedy scene. As Joey Gay said at the end of his story about a rowdy audience: “At this comedy club you can throw five ashtrays at a comedian and still not be thrown out and that’s the kind of comedy club NYC needs.”

Above: The comics from the second to last show, including Gay, Judah Friedlander, Rick Shapiro and owner/performer PJ Landers, pose on stage, with the audience invited to join them. Photo by Julie Seabaugh.

The Baggot Inn next door closed as well. It was a great place to go after the comedy shows.

I wasn’t able to get down to the final shows on Saturday, but I was invited to the going-away party last Thursday and it was a real treat seeing so many of the guys and gals who helped keep it kickin’ the last few years come together one last name. Judah and Chelsea and Ben Bailey, Mike DeStefano, Dustin Chaffin, Dean Edwards, of course P.J., Rondell Hartley and a slew of other talent who called the Village home. It was a great time. Sad to see it go.

It used to be The Boston Comedy Club, which was a real comedy club.  In it’s last days although occasionally real comedians performed there most of the line up was on par with the talentless guy (pj landers) who booked the place. Hopefully he’ll get th f*ck out of the business
